Little Stars Nursery in Glossop at National NMT Awards

We’re thrilled to announce that Nursery Chef Michele has been shortlisted to win ‘Nursery Chef 2016’ at the National NMT Awards. She’ll be competing in an exciting cook-off this October in a bid to win the prestigious award.

Michele has been Nursery Chef here at Little Stars since January 2015 and has shown amazing dedication from the start. She is so passionate about nutritious food that she even grows vegetables in her own allotment in her spare time!

Michele is travelling to Milton Keynes in October to compete against five chefs from nurseries across the country. Her challenge is to freshly prepare a well-balanced and nutritious two course meal from our healthy seasonal menu.

To start, Michele will be cooking up some delicious cheesy soda bread with bashed avocado. She will follow this with a serving of Salmon Tikka, Roasted Red Pepper Sauce and Jewelled Brown Rice. Michele chose this meal because the children love it and because it demonstrates how nutritious the food we serve here at Little Stars is.

Avocado contains more potassium than bananas, and is high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. Salmon is high in protein, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D. Brown rice is a whole grain and is a good source of magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, thiamine, niacin, vitamin B6, an excellent source of manganese and high in fiber.

Michele, who has been practicing the dishes in the run up to the big day said, “Being the Nursery Chef at Little Stars encourages me to think outside of the box and really engage with the children about the food they are eating. After all, children are the best kind of food critics because they’re not afraid to say what they think!

“Children love to experiment and try new things, so I love seeing their reactions when they try different ingredients from our menu. When the children have empty plates at the end of each meal, it gives me great satisfaction that we are doing a good job for them.

“We’re extremely proud of the nutritional food that we serve at the nursery and work hard to make our meals varied and exciting. It feels rewarding to have this hard work recognised by Nursery Management Today.”

We won’t know whether or not Michele has won the Nursery Chef 2016 Award until the winner is announced at the The National NMT Nursery Awards ceremony on 26th November. We’ll be there at the ceremony with our fingers crossed and will be sure to let you know if Michele sweeps up the award.
